Start with ownership and access
Website hosting is the service that keeps the files and data needed by a website available online. Before choosing a plan, find out who will register and control the domain, who can access the hosting account, and what happens if you later change providers. Make sure your business can reach the account owner and retrieve the details needed to manage the site.

Ask whether the domain and hosting will be registered in your business name. Clarify who keeps the login details, who can reset access, and how you receive a copy of your website files and database. If an agency manages the technical account for you, agree how access will be handed over if the working relationship changes.
Check what the plan actually includes
A plan can combine several services, so ask for the inclusions in writing. Confirm whether it covers the website itself, domain renewal, business email, backups, monitoring, security work and support. These are separate needs even when a provider presents them together. Ask how often backups are made, how long they are retained, and what steps are involved in restoring a site.
For business email, check how many mailboxes are included, how storage is handled and who helps if sending or receiving stops working. If you already use another email provider, make sure the new hosting setup will not interrupt it. Keep a record of renewal dates and which party is responsible for paying each renewal.

Ask how support works
“Support included” can mean different things. Ask which problems the provider handles, how you should report an issue, and what response process to expect. Clarify whether routine content edits, software updates, security checks or troubleshooting are part of the plan or quoted separately. Do not assume a particular response time or level of monitoring unless it appears in the agreement.
Plan for backups and a future move
Backups are useful only if they can be accessed and restored. Ask who can request a restore, whether it includes both website files and the database, and whether the restore process has been checked. Find out what information or assistance you would receive if you decided to move to another host. A clear answer helps you understand how portable your website is before you need to move it.

Compare the full arrangement
Compare providers using the same checklist: account ownership, domain renewal, email, backups, security, support and the process for leaving. Review the renewal price and the services that continue after any introductory period. Keep the scope and responsibilities in a written proposal or agreement so both sides know what is covered.
